Second Skin FAQs

Can I shower?

You can shower somewhat normally, but do your best not to over saturate it with water. This weakens the adhesive and may prevent you from wearing it as long as is suggested.

Can I swim?

Swimming or submerging a fresh tattoo with or without a second skin is strongly advised against, this can potentially trap water inside of your bandage which significantly increases your risk for infection.

How long should I keep it on?

The suggested amount of time to keep the on the second skin is between 4-7 days. Pockets of plasma/blood/ink are normal. If you notice redness around the second skin (not the tattoo) this may be a sign of a reaction and is a sign that you should remove it. If you’re unsure, please email me and I’d be happy to answer questions or help guide you in the right direction.

Can I exercise?

Light exercise is okay, but excessive exercise and sweating weakens the adhesive and may force ink out of your tattoo which impacts how it heals.

Should I moisturize?

Do not moisturize or wash the tattoo site until after the second skin is removed. Upon removal, ✨gently✨ wash tattoo with unscented soap (I prefer Hustle Bubbles Antimicrobial wash, dial gold or an unscented antimicrobial soap ). After washing, allow to dry (do not rub, pat dry if needed) and then moisturize with an unscented lotion or balm. When moisturizing, it is better to under moisturize vs. over moisturize. If your tattoo is shiny, you have probably used too much. I prefer to use Lubriderm or Mad Rabbit soothing gel

How do I remove it?

Soak with warm water in the shower for a few minutes, and then peel up a section at the bottom. Do your best to pull it away from itself- think: stretching rather than peeling. Some cases may want to hold the skin around it in place with one hand while stretching the derm with the other, this may help decrease pain. Some find that pulling in the direction that the hair grows helpful. Imagine removing a Command Strip, or google command strip removal and you’ll get the idea.
